This estate grown 2015 “Gravity” Merlot definitely deserves more than a Sideways glance, if you catch our drift. Washington State has consistently flipped the script on the idea that Merlot is a boring, outdated grape only to be found on the bottom shelf. For this grape to truly shine it requires warm sunny days with cool nights to help it reach full maturity while retaining a balanced acidity. Here in the Horse Heaven Hills, we have that. Deep ruby in color, the 2015 Gravity shows layered aromatics of plum, black cherry, cedar box and baking spice. Raspberry, plum, and subtle hints of blackberry compliment undertones of clove, vanilla and coffee on the palate, which are rounded out by firm yet extraordinarily well integrated tannins. The cooler night time temperatures play their role as a refreshing acidity brings this wine together in a balance that pays homage to the Horse Heaven Hills growing conditions. Although ready to drink now, this wine shows potential for cellaring upwards of five years. Enjoy!
